After School Homework Club & Late ProgramGet your homework FINISHED after school!! Teachers from Math/Science and English/History are available to help students with questions and assist students with their studies! Students have access to computers, textbooks, and other resources to assist them with school work and projects.
Book ClubBook Club is a great way to connect with other students passionate about reading. Come meet new friends, read a new book, and enjoy discussions and activities about the book! The Book Club is currently reading two selections: Compound or The Roar.
Community Service ClubThe Community Service Club meets on a monthly basis to provide students with the opportunity to participate in community services activities that meet the school-wide service hour requirement.
DISC GOLFHave you ever heard of DISC GOLF? YES? no? It doesn't matter! Join Mr. Schleich on Mondays and Thursdays and learn a new way to have fun! This is a great opportunity to be acvtive, make new friends, learn strategic thinking & team playing skills, while laughing, running, and having a great time! ECOAre you up for the challenge of making your school greener? The Irving Middle School Eco-Club was established to make Irving MS a greener place. It is a teacher facilitated, student directed club. Students do the research on what needs to be improved. Students come up with the game plan to improve the situation. Then students implement the program they have designed and monitor the progress. Eco-Club meets monthly.
Locker DecoratingLocker decorating is allowed for three students per locker. Students are responsible for completing a Locker Decoration form found in the main office, and must have permission from one of their teachers for supervision purposes. Students at Irving enjoy celebrating birthdays and special accomplishments by decorating the outsides of their friends' lockers!
National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)The National Junior Honor Society is only available to 8th grade students who have successfully completed the appliction process. Students who attended Irving in their 7th grade year will apply in the Spring of 7th grade. New 8th grade students new to Irving must provide either proof of previous acceptance into NJHS or complete the application, including having at least a 3.5 GPA and __ hours of community service.
Strength Training & Flag Football ClubStrength Training & Flag Football Club has several goals:
1. FUN, SAFE, and POSITIVE = All students have fun in a safe and positive organized environment while performing strength and conditioning, learning organized defensive and offensive flag football schemes in a 7 on 7 format. 2. IMPROVE STRENGTH, SPEED, CONDITIONING = Focus on all students improving upper body strength, lower body strength, core strength, speed, power, and agility through Coach Whitbourne’s Strength, Power, Speed, and Conditioning Training Program. 3. LEARN HOW TO PLAY REAL FOOTBALL POSITIONS = Focus on all students improving students’ understanding of all Flag Football positions on Defense as OLB’s, ILB’s, SS’s, FS’s, and CB’s; and on Offense as QB’s, TB’s, WR’s, TE, Slot R’s, and Centers. 4. LEARN HOW TO PLAY REAL FOOTBALL DEFENSIVES AND OFFENSES = Focus on all students improving their understanding of Defensive schemes, such as Cov. 1, Cov. 2, Cov. 3, and Cov. 4 Defenses; as well as Offensive Schemes, such as WR route Combos and Sets, QB 3-step, 5- step, and 7- step drops. Track ClubTrack club is for those students who are interested in or thinking about running track events in high school, enjoy the outdoors, would like to work on cardio-respiratory endurance, or socially get in shape with friends.
Students will be allowed in the locker room to change clothes as necessary. Several WSHS students come to assist and run through warm ups and activities they do daily at thier practices. Activities include distance running, sprints, relays and hurdles. The Video ClubLearn about the art and history of film making while using iPads, video cameras and several types of editing software to create various types of video projects.
Washington Irving School Paper (WISP)The Washington Irving Cavalier is an electronic newspaper and features a wide variety of stories, including current events, film and performance reviews, and teacher profiles.
Washington Irving Theatre Society (WITS)Acting, singing, dancing, playing games, doing improv, being silly, having fun. This is what WITS is all about. Whether you like to be the center of attention, be part of a fun group, or cheer from the audience, WITS has a spot for you. We will be producing one show this year: the musical ʺXanadu, Jr.ʺ

Art & Yearbook ClubYearbook club helps to design and publish our yearbook, known as Sketchbook.
In Art Club, students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities such as ceramics, print making, painting,drawing and paper craft. Students will also have the option to work with materials and media introduced in art class and use these to develop personal projects and learn new techniques. Students may choose activities that they are interested in exploring. This year the Art Club is responsible for painting a mural representing the entire WSHS pyramid. College Partnership ProgramAt Washington Irving Middle School, our College Partnership Program mission is simple: We strive to expose students to a variety of speakers, opportunities, and activities associated with high school and post-secondary options in order to encourage life long learning and success.
Students attending the College Partnership Program can expect to participate in a variety of activities. Here are some of our favorite:
KaleidoscopeKaleidoscope is Irving Middle's literary magazine. We produce an annual collection of student art work, poems, stories, essays, and other literary pieces. Students who come to our monthly meetings work on creating their own pieces of artwork or writing, and they also help in putting the final magazine together. It's a very laid-back club, and food is always provided!
Math CountsMathCounts is a competitive organization that trains all year for the regional team competition. The students are asked to work together as a team to quickly solve challenging questions. We compete in a regional meeting at Lake Braddock.
Ping Pong ClubThe Ping Pong Club is for all player levels and is open to all students. Never played? This club will teach you the basics and give you a chance to try something new!
Student Council Association (SCA)The SCA, Student Council Association, is a student elected leadership organization. SCA members meet monthly to discuss school concerns and organize school wide events. As leaders in the school, SCA members take concerns and ideas from the student body, voice them at monthly meetings, and communicate outcomes with the school Administration, Parent Teacher Organization and student body.
The SCA is responsible for the four school dances and the 8th grade dance. The SCA also organizes school spirit weeks such as "March Madness" and fun competitions such as the "Spook-tacular Pumpkin Carving Competition". Technology EdventuresThe Technology Edventures Club is designed to provide students various opportunities to explore the world of technology through a very ʺhands onʺ learning environment. The club’s STEM infused design challenges are structured in a way which persuades students to think creatively and try out many solutions to the design problems. Members are able to communicate their creative thinking process through different computer software which is accessible in the Technology lab.
The computer software which is covered during club meetings is listed below: -Sketchup (CAD) -Inkscape -Autodesk Inventor -Blender -Makerware -Lego Robotics NXT -Robot C Web Design ClubStudents explore basic design principles, write and style web pages using HTML, CSS styles and stylesheets. Design topics include alignment, proximity, repetition, contrast, fonts, images,white space, navigation, and usability. For a final project, each student creates a small website.
The Video Game ClubThe Video Game Club goal is to give students a place to meet other students who share a common interest as well as a share what they know with each other. All games that we will play will be approved by me and must have an Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating “E” for “Everyone”.
